Solar Energy Initiative in Zanzibar
In the northern village of Nungwi, we are working to set up a community based solar energy initiative to provide skills and knowledge to energy disadvantaged people in Northern Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is an island located off of the east coast of Tanzania and has a population of about 985,000. The life expectancy of the average zanzibari is 48 yrs and 60% of the population earns less than $150 per year. The majority of the population utilizes biomass and waste fuels such as firewood, charcoal, cow dung and agricultural residues as its primary energy source at great cost to the local environment. The resulting deforestation, soil erosion and air pollution have a negative impact on the population and the environment.

Energy access and production is critical for the economic transformation and modernization processes on the island. However the high prices involved with the expansion and upkeep of a centralized grid network make it imperative for a practical, cost effective and environmentally friendly solution to the growing energy deficit - small scale solar energy.

Together with a german and a tanzanian ngo, smallsolutions vision is to empower the local community with skills and knowledge that can help them become economically and socially more self-sufficient, live more healthy lives and better manage their environment.
